The Indian Coast Guard Assistant Commandant selection process is a multi-stage evaluation process to identify the best candidates for the Group ‘A’ Gazetted Officer role in the Indian Coast Guard. The selection process includes a computer-based admission test, psychological assessments, group tasks, medical examinations, and comprehensive training. Each stage of the selection process has eliminations, which will ensure the selection of the best candidates only. The process not only meant to tests academic knowledge but also assesses leadership skills, teamwork quality, and physical fitness, which aims for the preparations of candidates for the future challenges in the Indian Coast Guard.
Selection Process for Indian Coast Guard Assistant Commandant 2026 batch has following 5 stages:
Stage I: Coast Guard Common Admission Test (CGCAT)
- Mode of Examination: It will be a Computer-Based Test (CBT).
- Exam Pattern:
- There will be 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
- The following subjects are to be covered:
- English
- General Knowledge
- Reasoning
- Numerical Ability
- Mathematics
- General Science
- Purpose of stage I: The first stage is called the screening stage where the candidates are tested for screening test, a stage where the qualifying candidates have to appear for the next stage of the selection process.
Stage II: Preliminary Selection Board (PSB)
- Tests Conducted:
- Computerized Cognitive Battery Test (CCBT): It is a test which is taken to evaluate mental aptitude and decision-making skills of the candidates.
- Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PP&DT):
- Candidates are shown a random picture on the screen.
- All the candidates are Required to write a story based on the picture. Candidates are allowed to write any story based on what they perceived after seeing the picture on the screen.
- After the PP&DT test candidate have to appear in the group discussion. The group discussion will be based on the story shown in the PP&DT test.
- Purpose of stage II: To shortlist candidates for the Final Selection Board (FSB).
Stage III: Final Selection Board (FSB)
- Conducted at designated centers. The Final Selection Board (FSB)includes the following test:
- Psychological Test: This assess candidates’ psychological skills and compatibility for defense services.
- Group Tasks: This is done mainly to evaluate leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving qualities of the candidate.
- Personal Interview: The last stage of the FSB is Personal Interview which aims to assess personality, communication, and suitability of the candidate for the role of Indian Coast Guard Assistant Commandant.
Stage IV: Medical Examination
- Location: Medical Examination will be done at Base Hospital, New Delhi.
- Tests: Comprehensive medical tests to ensure candidates meet the physical and medical standards of the Indian Coast Guard for the role of Indian Coast Guard Assistant Commandant.
Stage V: Induction andTraining
- Location: Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala.

- Purpose of stage V: The final stage is the training which prepare candidates for their role of Indian Coast Guard Assistant Commandant.
